Grants to US ports to improve security


The ports of Houston, Georgia, Virginia and Jacksonville are among the recipients of $100m in port security grants that are going to port authorities, terminal operators and domestic law enforcement agencies to improve the security of ports across the U.S.

The US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency announced the grants with more that 33 ports awarded from the Port Security Grant Programme (PSGP).

The Port Authority of Houston will get more than $1.2m, Georgia Ports Authority will receive almost $1m, Virginia Port Authority will receive over $1.5m and Jacksonville Port Authority will receive over $500,000.

According to the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), the House FY 2018 DHS Appropriations bill includes $100 million for PSGP, and the Senate is expected to mark up its version of a DHS appropriations bill this month.
