National Tank Truck Carriers seeks exemption

The NTTC (National Tank Truck Carriers) wants the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to exempt drivers of trucks hauling petroleum-based fuels from the mandatory 30-minute rest break, and instead allow them to use it to check their load.

The NTTC said drivers who park their vehicles must check them due to the hazardous nature of their loads and that intermittent movement could increase the risk of an accident. The organisation believes the safest solution is to keep the load moving to its destination.

At the moment drivers must take a 30-minute rest break after every eight hours but this does not apply to drivers operating in shorthaul (100-air-mile) radius.

The NTTC said 38,000 trucks perform operations daily but that the number needing the exemption would be much smaller as most drivers transporting petroleum products are not required to take the break.
