Norfolk Southern Corporation (NS) has reported it third-quarter financial results of net income at $506m, up 10% year-over-year, driven by an 11% increase in income from railway operations.

Norfolk Southern CEO, James A. Squires said: “Norfolk Southern continues to deliver strong financial results through execution of our strategic plan. We are unwavering in our commitment to improve productivity as demonstrated by seven consecutive quarters of year-over-year improvement in our operating ratio. For the first nine months of 2017, net income was $1.4bn, up 15% compared with the same period of 2016. The strong results reflected 11% growth in income from railway operations.

In the third quarter, railway operating revenues of $2.7bn increased 6% compared with third-quarter 2016, as overall volumes were 4% higher, reflecting growth within its major commodity categories of coal and intermodal.
