Abbey Logistics signs up to Operation Clean Sweep®

Abbey logistics has signed up to operation clean sweep® (OCS), the international initiative from the plastics industry to reduce plastic pellet loss.

Led in the UK by the British Plastics Federation, the initiative’s aim is to ensure that plastic pellets, flakes, and powders that pass-through manufacturing facilities in the UK are contained and do not escape into waterways.

Signing up to the Operation Clean Sweep® pledge is a commitment to adhere to best practice and implement systems on a continuous improvement basis to prevent plastic pellet loss.

Abbey Logistics provides bulk plastic pellet haulage in road tankers and operates a bulk bag to bulk tanker reformatting service for plastic pellets. To ensure it implements best practice, Abbey has applied several procedures from OCS and provided training and awareness communications to the teams involved. This covers activities such as the correct way of handling, transferring, loading and unloading plastic pellets and how to prevent spills, and responsible cleanup procedures to guarantee zero pellet loss.

More than 250 sites across the UK have already signed up to Operation Clean Sweep®, which up until now have largely been plastics manufacturing plants. However, more companies who handle plastic materials along the supply chain are now taking action and pledging their commitment to zero pellet loss.

Abbey’s goal is to monitor our processes on an ongoing basis and improve them if necessary, as well as to remind and educate our teams and our industry partners in an effort to jointly prevent plastic pellet loss. Because the responsible handling of pellets both protects the environment, and delivers a more effective and efficient service for our customers.
