Arup appointed to advise on industry first LNG modular tank design

Arup has been appointed by Commonwealth LNG to provide specialist engineering services for the development of industry first LNG modular storage tanks.

Commonwealth LNG plans to construct and operate its proposed natural gas liquefaction and export facility in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, with first export of liquified natural gas commencing in 2024. The facility has a total liquefaction capacity of 8.4 million tonnes per year and a total LNG storage volume of 240,000 cbm.

The innovative design of the modular tank – an original concept by Arup – allows the tank to be constructed offsite at a dedicated fabrication yard in parallel with foundation construction onsite. This approach significantly reduces onsite labour and shortens completion time by up to one year. These benefits result in capital cost savings and overall project risk reduction.

Arup is supporting Commonwealth LNG to obtain final approval from the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission by providing structural, mechanical, and naval architecture engineering services in relation to the design of the modular storage tanks to be used at the facility. Upon approval, construction is expected to start in 2021.

“This is a great step for the LNG industry and could lead the way for new mid-scale storage options. The innovative design brings great benefits and we look forward to working with Commonwealth throughout the project to make those benefits a reality,” said Brian Raine, Americas Energy Leader.

“We’re very pleased to have Arup on our team. Their broad experience, depth of resources, technical creativity and responsiveness to our requests have made them valued partners on our LNG project,” commented Rob Powers, Senior Vice President, EPC – Commonwealth LNG.

When completed, the terminal will liquefy, store, and deliver LNG for export to global markets using modular tank storage.

The Commonwealth Project, which is located on the west bank of the Calcasieu Ship Channel at the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico, has a total liquefaction capacity of 8.4 million tonnes per annum and is anticipated to commence operations in the first quarter of 2024.
