Buckeye Terminal resumes operations after diesel spill

The Buckeye Terminal in the Arthur Kill Waterway near Port Reading, N.J. reopened last week following its closure as a result of a diesel oil spill on September 6.

The terminal resumed full operations with the opening of the south dock.

The unified command that was established in response to a diesel spill is now stood down. The Coast Guard will continue to work with N.J./N.Y. State agencies and the EPA to monitor the cleanup.

An estimated 56,000 gallons of oily product has been recovered during clean-up operations.

Clean up response operations included skimming, vac-trucks, and use of absorbent material to remove the diesel from the waterway. Approximately 6,500 feet of boom was deployed to protect sensitive sites and contain the diesel.

During the response there were no reports of injuries or impacted wildlife. The cause of the spill is under investigation.
