CLH Group approves a sustainability strategy to become a carbon neutral company
CLH Group has approved a sustainability strategy to become a carbon neutral company. The company plans to reduce its emissions by 50 per cent until 2025 and completely eliminate them by the 2050 horizon.
The strategy’s main objective is to achieve a zero contribution to the carbon footprint, in line with the Paris Agreements of December 2015 (COP 21) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This new strategy is made up of several specific plans and projects that will allow the CLH Group to strengthen its commitment to the protection of biodiversity, the efficient use of natural resources and the fight against climate change, in addition to collaborating with the oil sector in the development of eco-fuels:
Zero Emissions – It aims to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent until 2025 and make CLH a carbon neutral company by the 2050 horizon. To this end, the company is working on reducing its energy consumption, through the replacement of its equipment with more efficient ones, the incorporation of new technological developments and the purchase or self-generation in our renewable electricity installations. In addition, if necessary, it also plans to promote emission compensation measures.
CLH2O – Its goal is to reduce water consumption, especially in the cleaning of storage tanks and in the testing of fire equipment, which are the activities that have the highest consumption of this resource in the company.
Natural Services – It consists of achieving a null impact on ecosystems that may be affected by CLH operations, through the development of restoration or compensation measures, if necessary.
In addition, the company has recently launched two new projects with the objective of contributing to a more sustainable development, related to the use of hydrogen and the recycling of plastics for the production of liquid fuels.
The CLH Group has signed an agreement with the U.S. company Plug Power, a world leader in the design and marketing of hydrogen cell systems, to extend the use of this energy in Spain. The objective of this alliance is to offer integral solutions to sectors and activities where the use of hydrogen may be the most efficient zero-emission solution, such as material handling or freight transport.
The company is also participating in a project that is funded by the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI), to obtain liquid fuels from plastic bags obtained from garbage.
CLH and the environment
In accordance with this philosophy, the company has a demanding Environmental Management System that includes different policies and programs aimed at guaranteeing the sustainability of all its operations.
In addition, storage facilities in Spain have the ISO 14001 certification, in recognition of the highest criteria of environmental responsibility and their commitment to operate in a manner that respects the environment, and CLH Aviation Ireland recently achieved it for the first time.
To all this it is added that the CLH Group carries out an environmentally clean activity, since it does not carry out any manufacturing or energy generation process, so its emissions to the atmosphere are very limited. In addition, the use of pipelines to transport fuels, instead of other alternative means, prevents the emission of more than 370,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere per year and releases more than 670,000 tankers from the roads.
