MDL and Usakos, Namibia, to develop oil storage facility

The town of Usakos, Namibia, has teamed up with MDL International to develop an oil storage facility with a capacity of over 200 million litres of fuel.

“It is a large-scale undertaking for this area. MDL International and its investors envisage the establishment of a fuel and gas storage terminal in Usakos from where it wants to distribute these products to countries like Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe,” Ivin Lombardt, Chief Executive Officer of the Usakos Town Council is reported to have said.

When the feasibility study was being undertaken it was made clear to MDL International that there is a need to distribute the petroleum products “ASAP” and pressure was put on the company to start doing so. The estimated time to complete the land purchase, the Environment Impact Assessment and the construction of the storage base will be around 2 years. With this in mind MDL International decided to tackle this project in 2 phases.

Phase 1, which is to establish a logistics centre, has already begun. It will be followed by phase 2 later in the year with the construction of the actual storage terminal.

In April 2016 MDL International Trade appointed OAS – Engineering and Construction Namibia (Pty) Ltd as a main contractor and to Design the Preliminary Conceptual Plan. Feasibility studies as well as preliminary designs have already been completed.
