Port of Frederikshavn announces major expansion to develop ‘Scandinavia’s largest bunker terminal’

The Port of Frederikshavn has announced that it is to develop “Scandinavia’s largest bunker terminal”, with an accumulated capacity of 75,000 m³ for maritime fuel and slop.

It said in an online statement: “On the far end of the new port area, 11 large oil tanks are now shooting out of the ground. In a year, they will become Scandinavia’s largest bunker terminal all together. The new terminal will have an accumulated capacity of 75,000 m³ for maritime fuel and slop.”

Stena Oil is going to be renting and operating the oil terminal. The statement added that the new terminal will result in “a significant increase in efficiency” for Stena Oil, “since they will both be faster and more flexible in the deliveries of fuel to vessels in Skagerrak and Kattegat.”

It also said that the location at Port of Frederikshavn “gives a shorter distance to the area, where most of the bunkering takes place. The terminal’s many storage tanks both mean an important secure future and a contribution to making shipping more sustainable.”

Mikkel Seedorff Sørensen, CEO at Port of Frederikshavn, said: “Today the tanks will not only be filled with heavy fuel oil and diesel oil. We already see many new special refined products and more will come concurrently with the environmental directives. This demands a lot of capacity distributed across several tanks, it order to blend – for example oil and bio oil. With a terminal of this size in Frederikshavn, we will be able to deliver it all a long time in the future.”
