Port of Rotterdam unveils ‘seven building blocks for the port of the future’

Port of Rotterdam said the port of today is a hub that handles not just cargo but also data. It said information comes in from a range of sources: from shippers and shipping companies, from port authorities, terminals, customs and supervisory authorities.

Port of Rotterdam said: “A port’s appeal as a hub depends on how good we are at linking these different sources. The effective coordination of data flows improves efficiency, transparency, predictability and lead times. The port of the future will be a vital digital connection in multiple chains – many of which have already become predominantly digital themselves.”

It believes that the port of the future will need seven distinct building blocks:

  • Organisation and clients
  • Assets
  • Infrastructure
  • Environment and stakeholder engagement
  • Energy
  • Digital transition
  • Innovation

It has created a white paper that explains the steps that need to be taken for each building block. In that paper it also describes the impact that COVID-19 will have on, for instance, the energy transition and digitisation.
