Porto Maghera storage facility given the go-ahead by authorities for Venice LNG

Venice LNG, which is a subsidiary of the Decal Spa Group, has announced it has received official authorisation for the construction and operation of a 32,000 cubic metre-capacity LNG storage facility in Porto Maghera which will support the fuelling of shipping and road transportation.

The proposed terminal would feature a berth for LNG carrier ships from 7,500 to 30,000 cbm and be suitable for vessels up to 65,000 cbm in normal weather conditions. Berthing would be undertaken at Decal 1 quay, which was renewed in 2016. It would also include a berth for 1,000 cbm-capacity LNG barges and up to five loading lanes for LNG tanker trucks.

The new facility will provide a fuel supply infrastructure for road transport and shipping. LNG will arrive at the Venice LNG storage terminal by small and medium-sized LNG carriers and will be distributed via tank trucks, ISO tanks and barges.

“We are pleased to have reached the Authorisation Decree, since it confirms the value of our project,” said Gian Luigi Triboldi, president and CEO of Venice LNG.

Issued in late December 2020 by the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport, in agreement with the Veneto Region, the Authorisation Decree was announced last week.

Triboldi added: “Our project went through a long technical-administrative path, involving many authorities and local community too. Now, we are ready to give our contribution to promote the use of LNG, which plays a key role in the energy transition process.”

Decal Spa Group, (through Venice LNG) has invested over €100 million in the project. The initiative is also supported by the North Adriatic Sea Port Authority and co-financed by the European Commission under the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) initiative through the Gainn4SEA and Venice LNG Facility projects, by a total of €18.5 million.
