Rail freight giants team up on safety

Two of the UK’s leading rail freight companies joined forces during National Rail Safety Week (June 24-28) to tackle the issues of site safety and security.

Colleagues from DB Cargo UK and GB Railfreight set aside commercial rivalries to carry out joint safety inspections. The inspections were carried out at rail depots in West Midlands and South Yorkshire regions which the two freight companies operate.

DB Cargo UK’s Head of Safety, Security and Environment, Richard Lait, said: “The freight community has matured significantly in recent years, to the extent whereby events like these are now possible – working together to tackle shared risks across the industry makes perfect business sense.”

“We are acutely aware of our legal responsibilities within our respective organisations but through a collaborative and mature approach we share a similar vision that, besides the legal cooperation requirements, morally is the right thing to do in ensuring the safety of our own people, along with others who may be affected by our respective operations such as the general public and our neighbours,” he added.

Stuart Anderson, Head of Safety at GB Railfreight, said: “This is an opportunity to further demonstrate the commitment of the Freight Operating Companies to press forward with its cooperation under ROGS (the Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (Safety Regulations) 2006).”

“The National Freight Safety Group platform has generated enhanced relationships and given direction and purpose to industry safety that is supported by all. During this week we will be visible, engaged and want to communicate with our teams on the ground collectively. Both organisations want to know what can be done to improve at locations, lone working, from a wellbeing perspective and any other areas that wish to be shared,” he added.
