Shenzhen Gas finalises mid-scale LNG carrier order

Chinese gas distributor Shenzhen Gas has finalised an order for a single 80,000 m³ LNG carrier, with an option for another vessel, at China’s Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard.

The vessel is expected for delivery in January 2023, Shenzhen Gas said, with construction starting this April.

Shenzhen Gas expects to use the carrier to supply its 800,000 t/yr LNG import terminal in Guangdong. The facility has only 80,000 m³ of storage capacity, meaning it is unable to receive full deliveries from larger carriers, which make up the vast majority of the global fleet.

The terminal began operations last year, and the owner estimates that the vessel will be able to deliver up to 700,000 t/yr, Shenzhen Gas said.

The firm is one of a number of domestic Chinese gas buyers and distributors that have ordered LNG carriers with capacities of around 80,000 m³ in recent years. The carriers will be able to load cargoes at southeast Asian export projects, but their shallower draft means that they can also navigate China’s arterial waterways – most notably the Yangtze River.
