THIELMANN WEW delivers fuel tanks to Norwegian Polar Institute

At the beginning of May, THIELMANN WEW delivered five fuel tanks to the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) for deployment to Antarctica.

The five tanks will form part of a fuel tank farm near NPI’s Troll Station, the Norwegian research station in Antarctica. Each tank holds 24,000 litres of diesel which will be used to refuel research vessels and generators that are used for NPI field research.

THIELMANN WEW received the order for the five fuel systems at the end of August, 2017. The tanks were built at the company’s Weitefeld facility to a very tight schedule, with work completed in mid-November. The contract also included a range of accessories including stairways, ladders walkways and handrails for personnel access to the fuel wells. They will be used with external pumping systems.

Each tank container is built within a 20’x8’x8’6” welded headbeam frame. Made of stainless steel with 3.0mm double shell, the tanks are equipped for top discharge and are certified to store and transport jet ATF fuel, diesel fuel and petroleum via road, rail and sea.

The tanks departed the Weitefeld facility on November 28 for Denmark, where they were filled with diesel fuel for transportation on to NPI’s Troll Station. The self-contained tank container design means that the tanks require minimal site preparation prior to delivery, and will be ready to begin discharging fuel immediately after their arrival on site.

Daniel Jahn, project manager for the contract, said that despite the fast turnaround times specified by the contract, the build went smoothly.

“As THIELMANN WEW tanks are built out of steel capable of withstanding the specified minimum operating temperature of more than minus 40 degrees Celsius, we did not need to bring in any special equipment or tooling to complete the build quickly,” Daniel said. “And as all our tank container systems are completed with hard-wearing paint and require no maintenance throughout their service life, we are confident that these tanks will be providing fuel to the NPI for the next 30 years or more.”

NPI’s order is part of a wider five-year framework contract that includes options for the organisation to order up to 30 tank systems in total.
