Vitol Aviation supplies first cargo to world’s biggest airport

Vitol Aviation delivered the first fuel cargo for the Istanbul New Airport in August. Due to open in late 2018, the airport, which is the largest ever built from scratch, will have the capacity for 90 million passengers a year, with plans to upgrade to over 150 million passengers a year in the future.

The 115,273 deadweight metric tonne LR2 Pioneer chartered by Vitol docked at the airport’s dedicated IGA Fuel Supply Port at Karaburun on August 10, discharging around 90,000 tonnes of jet fuel from South Korea. 

“Vitol SA trade teams working with Vitol Aviation, our group affiliate [Turkey’s] Petrol Ofisi Aviation and the new airport owners IGA have delivered the first fuel into Istanbul New Airport,” said Toby Davies, Vitol Aviation General Manager.

Vitol Aviation had a crucial role in ensuring the jet fuel supply chain and facilities are ready for the opening of this major new airport, with the full depth and resources of Vitol’s global jet fuel trading, supply operations team and the technical fuel-handling capabilities of Vitol Aviation and Petrol Ofisi’s regional expertise brought together to ensure that the facilities at the new airport are brought on line in full compliance with fuel quality and handling in accordance with global industry standards under JIG/EI1530.

Vitol Aviation was able to deliver this cargo thanks to the “unique expertise and skills that can only be gained through building and commissioning other new deepwater receipt and storage facilities over the last decade,” added Davies.
